Jennifer Lopez Faces Intense Backlash After Launching Alcohol Brand

September 2024 · 3 minute read

Jennifer Lopez has come out with a variety of branded products during her decades-long career, from clothing to perfume. But the singer’s recent business venture is seeing her launch her very own alcohol brand.

Last week, JLo revealed her latest brand Delola, which is a ready-made cocktail mix available in three flavors. She posted an ad to Instagram unveiling the new line.

"I have been grinding nonstop for decades, and more and more, I realize the importance of enjoying life," she said in the clip. "I just wanted to create something better. Better tasting, better ingredients, something I want to drink with my friends and family, and that is Delola."

The Wedding Planner star said the brand’s moniker was inspired by her nickname Lola.

“She is the part of me that lets loose,” Jennifer explained. “She doesn’t come out all that often – but when she does, she goes hard... I realize that as I’ve gotten a little older, I’d like her to make more appearances.”

However, despite just launching the alcohol line, JLo has already received backlash over the new brand, specifically because she’s previously admitted to not drinking alcohol.

The singer has been labelled opportunist and inauthentic for launching an alcohol line that she likely doesn’t enjoy personally, or at least frequently, considering her previous comments on her alcohol consumption.

Previously, JLo said she cut alcohol out of her diet along with smoking and caffeine in order to preserve her looks. “I don’t drink or smoke or have caffeine,” the actress has said.

Moreover, it’s not just that JLo doesn’t drink that some fans have an issue with, but also that her husband Ben Affleck is sober after struggling with alcoholism for years, making the alcohol line seem in even worse taste.

During a 2021 interview with Howard Stern, Ben said he drank so much during his marriage to Jennifer Garner because he felt “trapped.” JLo later defended his controversial comments to the media and supported his sobriety, saying, “I couldn’t have more respect for Ben as a father, co-parent, and person.”

Posting in the comments of JLo’s Instagram ad for Delola, one person wrote, "Wow. I'm so disappointed and confused by the narrative that she puts out about how she doesn't drink alcohol and all the benefits from not drinking. And her partner is sober?”

Another critic added, "She doesn't drink alcohol so just goes to show what she will do for money."

So far, Jennifer hasn’t publicly responded to the criticism over Delola, and the brand still plans to launch on time, it seems.
