What happens when you combine the acting talents and sheer beauty of eight Hollywood heavyweights in one film? You get Ocean’s 8, the highly anticipated crime flick starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina and Rihanna. No spoilers here, but the film is centered around a very fashionable heist, with the ladies plotting to steal a $150 million Cartier necklace at the annual Met Gala. So, as you can imagine, the costuming, hair and makeup are all truly next level.

We caught up with the movie’s makeup department head (and Anne’s personal pro), Louise McCarthy, at an advanced screening of the film, and she shared just what goes into pulling off a project of this magnitude. In addition to contending with high-def cameras and shooting on location all over NYC (including nights at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to recreate a fictitious version fashion’s biggest night), McCarthy explained that all eight actresses rarely filmed at the same time — but that didn’t mean there wasn’t plenty of coordination amongst the artists to share tips and trick and ensure no one ended up wearing the same lip color (perish the thought!).
