Was Monica Really The Glue That Held The Group Together On 'Friends'?

When it comes to hashing out the details of 'Friends', fans really don't care that the show ended over 15 years ago. The six main characters still feel fresh in fans' minds, and there is still plenty of discussion over why things happened the way they did onscreen.

The dynamics among the cast are also something that's often discussed. After all, some of the characters, like Carol, actually changed during the series, which could have thrown a wrench in things.

But the six central characters (Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler, and Joey) were what fans fixated on the most. Anyone else was almost second-fiddle, even Carol, despite the fact that she was Ross's baby mama.

And when it comes to deciding which "friend" was really the glue that holds the whole group together, some fans are indecisive. But others are firm in their belief that Monica is the one who really tied them together and actually carried the show as a result.

Many of the 'Friends' cast sacrificed other roles and even their looks for the show. Jennifer Aniston even lost weight before becoming Rachel on 'Friends.' As far as characters, however, most fans on Quora agree that Monica was the most selfless and therefore the centerpiece of the group.

Why? One fan explains that while the guys' apartment was right across from Monica's, most of the filming happened in her place. That's telling, they say, as is the fact that Phoebe apparently became part of the group due to her being roommates with Monica originally.

That same fan also believes that "Monica was either at the core or the instigator of some of the best episodes and story arcs." Thinking back, it's clear that Monica and Chandler's relationship was one of the highlights of the series. Some episodes even centered on their marriage.

And while the drama between Ross and Rachel drew plenty of ire and opinions from fans, Monica and Chandler were just old reliable. It was heartwarming to see their relationship grow, especially when compared with Ross and Rachel's seemingly toxic pairing.

Another fan also points out that Ross says something to the effect of Monica being the glue that holds the group together in one episode. Yet another fan highlights that when Rachel thanked the group for welcoming her in, Joey replies with something along the lines of, 'well Monica made us.'

Of course, plenty of fans disagree that Monica was the 'Friends' glue. In fact, in a "ranking" of the six central characters, Independent rates Phoebe as the best/most popular. A combination of high comedy, likeability, and drama potential earned her the top spot, while Monica tied with Ross for #5.

Not all fans are going to agree, of course, but it's clear that Monica did have some special "something" that helped shape the show into the epic sitcom it became.
